I have been thinking about the answer for that crossword for the longest time! And you'd think that after years of experience in the car finance and automotive industry, I would know better! In any case, if you're looking for the answer on how a car works, I suggest that you get onto YouTube and search for a video. The technicalities of how the engine and various components in the car, coupled with the fuel can get very complicated and a video might be a better representation.

A car moves (Kineticly) by pushing the accelerator pedal which releases more ( Increases ) fuel. This fuel is burnt and it affects the car because created a gas creats presher to the mecanism of the wheel. The mecanism of the wheel is simply made to be move circularly if pushed and the preshure created by the burnt feul ( Gas ) makes the wheels move circularly ( Role). The wheels surface are made of a really rough material so that the car is more easilly pulled by the wheels on the ground, to creat friction which makes any movment of the wheel grip the floor and push it and to not slid on the floor because ofthe friction it will creat.

This is a huge answer, so I'll give you the short version. The engine creates the power than turns the transmission gears. The transmission turns the drive shaft that is connected to the axle gear which rotates the axle that holds the wheels.

You control the gear shifting (manual) or the trans controls them automatically. When you press down on the accelerator pedal that opens the fuel valve than allows more combustion (power) to your engine. The more the power, the faster you go.
