The car is a 2004 Galant Mitsubishi. The seller says the car runs fine. The exterior looks good. As for the interior, it needs a water pump and battery. The car starts up fine with an auto starter. The engine looks corroded though. He's asking $600. Is this a good deal or should I pass?

In my honest opinion I would pass. Sounds like more of a headache then a good thing.

Water pump is not a Little thing . . . Most people do the Timing Chain at the same time just to save on the large amount of labor involved. Unless you are capable of doing the work yourself, tack on another $500 to $700 to the cost for the water pump. Also tack on another $110 for a battery IF it is really the battery . . It could be the Alternator not charging the battery correctly.

Pass it! It's a 2004 Mitsubishi so it has some age and probably a lot of miles. A new battery (or possibly alternator) can run over a hundred. Mechanics typically change the timing belt while they are messing with the water pump. That can lead into several hundreds as well. My Nissan cost $850 to get that type of work done. The repairs will cost far more than the car. It's not worth it.
