My timing belt broke while driving and the mechanic said it caused the engine to be ruined. Is this true? My car is a 2004 Nissan X-terra.

All I can say is when my timing belt broke, the car stopped immediately, so I don't see how it could have "ruined" your engine.  Not saying it's not possible, just saying get more than one opinion from one mechanic.  If you're in the US, and have AAA, they can recommend a qualified reliable mechanic.  Good luck!

The older cars with chains use to be that way,but if it's just broken belt and it fell off what could it of hurt nothing.I think he's pull in your chain....
