You need to start by finding the Low Pressure Side Connector in your car. You will be able to find this by either the firewall, or it could be centered in the front of the engine. This depends on the model that you own, so look in both places to be sure to find the connector. When you find it you should see a blue, black or a yellow cap that is either marked by an L or a LOW. You should just remove this cap and make sure that you store it in a safe place so that you do not lose it - you'll need it later on in the process.
You should then determine whether you care uses a R12 refrigerant or an R134 refrigerant. If the connectors that are found on the Low Pressure Side are screw-on connectors, then your car will take R12. This means that it must be retrofitted so that it will be able to accept a new R134 refrigerant. Any cars that use the R134 refrigerant already will have easy to access quick connect valves.
You should next look at your air conditioning lines, and look for any signs of damage on them. Some car part and mechanic stores will be able to sell you a leak detection kit that obviously makes finding leaks much easier. Use the kits to find leaks in the system, no matter how small they are. If you can see any visible damage, though, then you should ensure that you take your car to a professional mechanic who will be able to fix the leaks for you before you go about recharging your air conditioning system. You probably won't be able to do this so it's better to spend the money having somebody who knows what they are doing fixing the car.
