A tie rod is the part in your car that makes your front wheels steer in the direction you want to go. It will have tie rod "ends" that pivot and let it stay attached to the steering equipment as the parts in the suspension move. If the tie rod ends wear out the wheel alignment will be off, the steering will not work well and the tires will wear quickly.

Tie rods them selves so not wear out but the "ends" of them do. In the good old days they had grease fittings and as long as you greased them they would last forever. Today tie rod ends do not have grease fittings and are greased for "life" which is not forever...
