What Valuables Were Onboard the Titanic?

There have been lots of rumours about the valuables that were on the Titanic when she sank.  It was rumoured that a priceless volume of Omar Khayyam's The Rubaiyat was lost, and although it is true that the book did go down with the Titanic, it was actually purchased originally for £405 (which as of 2012 would be worth around £40,000).

There was a safe on board the Titanic where all wealthy passengers were said to have stored their valuables.

It was thought to contain:

  • Diamonds
  • Jewellery
  • Gold
  • Bank notes

When the safe was finally opened in 1987, it contained just one diamond bracelet.

The Titanic had many wealthy passengers but most millionaires don't carry their wealth around with them, and so most of the myths surrounding the treasures of the Titanic are false.

Items recovered from the Titanic today would be very valuable, but this would be because of their historical connection rather than their actual worth.

  • Consignments of diamonds for New York jewelers
  • British gold sovereign coins
  • Picasso paintings
  • A jeweled covered copy of Omar Khayyam, which was sold at Sotheby's March 29, 1912, for 405, ($2,025.00) and would be worth a huge fortune today if still intact and protected somehow (such as covered in leather and protected by the tannins in leather. A wallet that was recovered still had paper money and tickets inside.)

A great many other valuables that were also on board are now lost - personal jewelry of wealthy people that was kept in safes etc.
