When Titanic went down, many people filed lawsuits against White Star in the United States. First of all RMS Titanic Inc went to court on several occasions for getting full rights to the remains of the Titanic ship and the valuables inside it. Many people filed lawsuits against white star for compensation, some of the known ones were:
Marion Thayer: Claimed $14,910 for her husband's baggage
Charlotte Cardeza: Claimed $177,353 for her lost
There were many other as well, some of them travelling in third class who could not even afford to file a lawsuit themselves. All these lawsuits were settled in 1916 when White Star agreed to pay around $430 for each life lost on the ship.
