I show a 1989-96 Tracker with the base Suzuki 1.6 litre SOHC (8 valve) engine to be a non-interference engine. However, if yours is the DOHC (16 valve) version, then it probably would be an interference engine.
Yes, the '96 16v is an interference engine. Belt intervals are every 60k miles and I would personally recommend sticking to that schedule; you won't know if the belt has walked unless the cover is off and by then you might as well replace it since getting the cover off is the hardest part of the job; just did it myself this last winter, with the A/C lines in the way figure on about 4 hours labor total.
Ive seen on blogs this guy says he staring at a suzuki manual that says all 16 valve 1.6 liter are interference engines 8 valves are not. Also 1996 and up schedule t belt swap at 100000 mi. Instead of 60000 or 80000.having just bought a 96 tracker w/ 115000 on it I looked all over the internet for this answer but still am not 100% positive. And it a 4 point timing alignment sounds like a real pain in the hoo ha, so, if there is 100000 mi. Of dirt on your t belt cover bolts I would have this done immediately. I have had a broken t belt on a interference engine and its one thing I will never neglect again
Where can I find the engine number on the block of a tracker 94?
