My timing belt just broke this morning. The mechanic said it's pretty much luck of the draw as to a broken belt will damage the engine... So since you asked the question a while ago, I hope everything turned out well for you and that the engine wasn't damaged.
And yeah, you're right, this is soooo frustrating-- I've never broken a timing belt, and I don't know whether this was just bad luck or a bad-quality belt.
