Too much ATF could create foam, and foam in the transmissions hydraulic system is not good for how it shifts. Some people also say that it can create pressure that will damage seals and cause leaks.

But before you go and drain some ATF go out and check it correctly: Engine running and fully warmed up, level on dipstick should be between the lines.

The fluid could foam up a bit and make the transmission act very weird.

But first make sure that you checked the fluid correctly. Should be done with the engine/transmission fully warmed up AND the engine running. Fluid should be at the top line of the dipstick.

If it really is too high you may be able to rig up a hose and a turkey baster and remove the excess fluid.
