The ATF is located in the transmission.
If you are wanting to check the fluid level, start the car in park, pull out the dipstick, wipe it off, reinsert it and it will give you the fluid level.
Notice on your dipstick, (like all Fords), there will be a mark that says; Hot. If you check it after the engine is hot, then that is the level it should be at. If you are checking it when the engine is cold, it is going to be below that level.
The dipstick is located towards the rear of the engine on the drivers side of the car. It's not real easy to locate because it is close to the firewall and down low in the engine compartment.
If the fluid level is low, you will need to add fluid thru the dipstick tube, using a funnel.
The only time you need to have the engine running is when you check the fluid. Add fluid only with the tranny in park and the engine is NOT running.
