You must slide the axle back enough to get a socket on the bolts. Getting the axle to slide back could be the difficult part. Sometimes it will be so rusted you will literally have to beat it out with a 10-12 Lb sledge hammer. But by doing that you could damage the end of the axle and have to replace that as well.
