If the Batt light came on it is possible that the alternator has gone out!
The battery supplies power for start up then receives a charge from the Alt, The Alt after start up takes over from the battery and supplies electrical power to the system. If the Alt goes out or is very weak, the Battery picks up more and more of the load and will die in a short time. Have the Alt. and battery checked. Before checking the battery charge it for an hour or so then check it with a load tester. Most part stores can check it without charging any fee if you bring the battery in to them! They can also charge it, at least most of them can.
The Alt. can be checked two ways, "in" or "out" of the car. If you pull it off the car, a lot of parts stores can check it as well! On the car would mean checking it with the proper tool for the job that most people don't have in their home garage. If the car can be towed to a local repair shop they could do the check and repair it if you are not mechanically inclined! If you know a friend that has an "Ampmeter" then you can check it without going any where and do the work yourself, Again if you are mechanically inclined!
Good Luck!
