Engine Control Unit. It is a small computer that controls many engine functions. The first ECU's only controlled the fuel/air mixture, a few years latter they would also control ignition timing. Gradually many more functions that had in the past been controlled by mechanical means were added to the ECU's capability.

Today cars in the US have a system called OBD II (On Board Diagnostic 2) that not only controls almost all engine functions, it also remembers what went wrong and when.
