This is an automatic transmission?
Automatic transmissions have a complex hydraulic system inside them to engage different gears as directed by the driver and the computer.
This hydraulic system has a pump that sucks up the transmission fluid from the transmission pan and then uses the now pressurised fluid to operate the transmission.
If the fluid level is too low the pump will suck up air as well as fluid which will turn to foam. Foam, being part air and part fluid, will not operate the parts in the transmission as well as just fluid would. This can make the transmission slip which is very bad! When an automatic transmission slips too much internal parts will wear out way fast and if this happens enough the transmission will be wrecked.
Unfortunately some car makers no longer even give us a simple dipstick to check the transmission fluid anymore! This makes it much more difficult to check. Because of this it is very important to have a mechanic check the transmission fluid level.
