What Does The Car Do If Your Fuel Pump Is Bad?

I just found out my fuel pump went bad--I was about to leave the parking lot, threw it in reverse, and it stalled out.  Then it wouldn't restart.  The engine cranked, and eventually I got it to turn over, but the idle was awful and as soon as I stepped on the gas it stalled out.  It is not going to be a cheap fix, so I hope this isn't your cars problem...

Take off the fuel line and have someone crank over the motor. If it is bad nothing will come out, if it is good watch out because gas will come pumping out. Keep away from your face and shut off right away.

Have a mechanic do a fuel pressure check this will tell you if the pump is working properly or on  most vehicles you should be able to hear the pump kick on.you can also have the wiring checked to see if the pump is getting power...

In general it will do nothing. It will not start.

Most of the time fuel pumps just fail no will not work at all. In rare cases they will fail in a way so that they just put out low fuel pressure.

If your fuel filter is dirty or plugged your car won't run right. The same goes for the fuel pump. It sounds like your starter might be going bad. Of your car needs a tune up and maybe new spark plugs. A lot cheaper than replacing a fuel pump. It might also be a dirty fuel injector nozzle.

^^^^^It may not be the fuel pump.  A bad needle, seat or jet in a carburator can cause the problem stated above.  Without knowing the make, model or diagnostics, it is impossible to say.  PS.  In many cases the fuel filter is clogged and reacts exactly as if the fuel pump was bad.  Thats where I would start.

More information is needed. Older cars have a manual fuel pump. New cars have electric in the tank. More possibilities....describe what is happening...
