In general you can not. Cars made after 1996 are supposed to have a system called OBDII which controls the check engine light.
Best thing to do is go to a local auto parts store. They should have a code scanner that can reset the light. But if there really is something wrong the light will come back on. Ask the person at the parts store to see if there are any trouble codes stored. That will tell you what the car thinks is wrong. This service is often FREE!
