Worn gearbox bearings would be the prime suspect behind a noisy gearbox, a signal that it is time for a rebuild. Before doing that, first check that the gearbox oil is clean and filled to the correct level.

Generally, gearboxes should not be excessively noisy unless worn. Noise, however, is all relative. Remember to bear in mind that main cause of gearbox noise is the complete lack of sound proofing, so don't judge your Series 3's gearbox against that of a modern car or newer Land Rover.

Re. the engine, the standard two and a quarter should pull well. Check the carb and throttle linkages to ensure there is full movement and that both chokes are being fully opened.

Check, too, that the ignition timing is set correctly and that the vacuum advance mechanism is operational. To test the latter, remove the distributor cap and remove the rubber vacuum pipe from the carb. By sucking on the open end, you should see the distributor base plate moving if it is working properly.
