The cam shaft sensor is located at the right side of the engine block in a 3,1 Chevy lumina. Replacing it is a difficult task, so consulting a mechanic is better but if you want to repair it yourself you can easily find it at the right side of engine block.
Camshaft and cam position sensor are located pretty much directly under the power steering pump on a chev lumina 3100.to get to the sensor you have to remove the power steering pump .first relieve belt tension there are 3 13 mm bolts on the pump remove then pull the pump straight up making sure the hose with the rubber line clears the fuel rail test valve or else it might feel like its stuck.patience up and out of the way.then there is one 8 mm bolt that holds the sensor in remove and wiggle the sensor while pulling straight up. Code po341 is usually set for this sensor.hope this helps.
In a Lumina, it's a transverse engine, so yes, it does sit sideways.
Your camshaft sensor would be located on the firewall side of the engine. ( The side closest to the passenger compartment), rather than the side next to the radiator.
