this sounds like you are low on anti freeze.  While the engine is cool, remove the radiator cap.  Turn on the engine and the heater to circulate the water.  You should see the level of water in the radiator.  You probably are low.  Add anti freeze and replace cap.  Look for signs of leaking on hoses and radiator. If that is the problem, you can get a radiator sealant at any auto parts store.  If adding anti freeze does correct the problem, but it returns after a few days, your thermostat may be failing.  Good luck
