If you follow my step-by-step guide here you won’t go too far wrong.

The Yamaha V Star 1100 features an 1100cc air-cooled V-twin engine, telescopic front suspension, five-speed transmission, disc brakes and cast aluminium wheels. All models feature two independent 37 mm Mikuni carburettors, used to deliver the air and fuel mixture to each engine cylinder. Locating the correct carburettor for each cylinder is necessary for certain maintenance and repair tasks.

For this task you’re going to need an Allen wrench, Phillips head screwdriver and carburettor cleaner.

1.Allow the engine to completely cool before working on the motorcycle.

2.Remove the round air filter cover, located directly below the fuel tank on the right side of the motorcycle, using an appropriate size Allen wrench. Then take out the black plastic air filter box, using a screw driver.

3.Loosen the clamp securing the large intake hose to the rear of the air filter box. Free the intake hose from the air filter box to expose the carburettor assembly connected to the front engine cylinder. The carburettor features a large black plastic top cover, several brass mixture adjustment screws and polished aluminium housing.

4. Remove the small chrome-plated cover on the left side of the engine, below the fuel shutoff switch, using an appropriate size Allen wrench, to expose the carburettor for the rear engine cylinder.

5.Now to clean -take the carburettors off, unscrew the bowl from the bottom, and take out the jets one by one, cleaning them perfectly. Clean with carburettor cleaner only. Be careful not to lose the needle hanging on the floats. Do not use steel wire to poke through the jets, it can score the edges and cause problems.

Follow this method and you’ll be just fine.
