Having four ball bearings replaced on an average car costs around $500 to $1000. This includes the labour the mechanic provides. For an individual ball bearing, the cost is around $30 to $80. If you are capable of replacing them yourself, it can save you quite a lot of money. It is dangerous to do if you aren’t trained to do it. It is quite a difficult task, which explains why the cost of labour is so high. Some cars require the use of a spring compressor. In this situation, you must let a mechanic do this replacement.  The price of labour is highest in luxury models of cars. If you have a car that has ball bearings that must be replaced as a unit, it will cost $500 to $600. The ball joints are a part of your car’s suspension. In some ways, they resemble ball and socket joints found in the human body. They are usually durable, but most wear out at some point. This is especially true for older cars. If you keep your car for 10 years or more, expect to have them replaced at least once.

Sometimes, replacing the ball bearings causes your wheels to be thrown out of alignment. In this case, you will have to have your wheels aligned. Most people do not have the equipment necessary to align their own wheels, so it is best to let a mechanic do this. Wheel alignments can be quite expensive. They vary from about $50 to over $100. Some mechanic shops provide discounts and coupons for wheel alignments for regular customers. These discounts can be valuable in situations like this. Many mechanics guarantee wheel alignments for up to a year. If you can find a mechanic that does this, it might be worth having it done there. Paying for an alignment several times a year is expensive.

I had a bad right front wheel bearing on my 2004 ford ranger 4X4.  When the mechanic took it for a ride he swore it was the left front wheel bearing that was bad but when he got it on the lift it turned out to be the right front.

300 dollars for the part and 85 dollars for the labor plus tax.
