An internal head gasket leak! I'd ask around and find an honest repair shop.

There is no single way to tell. But here are a couple of things to check out:

1. A compression test. If you do a compression test and some cylinders have very low readings you may have a blown head gasket.

2. Oil and water do mix. If there is oil in the coolant or coolant in the oil then you may have a blown head gasket.

3. Engine appears to be overheating. If the cooling system is under a lot of pressure before the engine warms up or if coolant is being blown out the pressure cap you may have a blown head gasket.

The important thing is that the engine may need more then just a new head gasket. Often the head has been warped by high temperatures and must be machined flat in order to really fix the problem. If you just slap the head back on without getting it flat you will just waste money.

You can tell the head gasket is blown if you're blowing out white smoke and when you change your oil you'll find water and antifreeze in the oil.

Most of the time you can't see it but if it blows on the outer side of the heads you might see it other wise you have to pull heads off then to see it
