Unbelievably, there were only one pair of binoculars on board, and the seamen in the crow's nest did NOT have them. Remember it was late, and pitch black. No lights except what was on the ship. The binoculars were a dire necessity, but someone else had the only pair. Also when they tested the temp. Of the water, it was not done correctly, so that did not help either. A lot of short cuts were taken, in the name of trying to be the fasted ship in the world. So mush for that.

There was a shortage of binoculars on the ship and there wasn't anyone in the crows nest.
