Crank means the motor is not turning. Starting means it is cranking but not firing up. If your fuel pump or filter was the problem, it would crank but not start. We have to know which it is before we can try to lead you to a solution. On some cars there is a switch in the trunk, called an inertia switch that will shut off the fuel pump in the event of an accident that will cause the fuel pump to stop. The Ford Motor Company were the first ones to initiate this feature as far as I know.
