You should switch to your low-beam headlights when an approaching vehicle is 1000 feet away and also when a vehicle you are following is 200 feet away or less. These rules should be honored at all times when out on the roads and there are very good reasons why they should not be ignored.

For example:

• When approaching an oncoming vehicle, if you fail to dim your lights you are running the risk of preventing the other driver from being able to see properly. This could cause them to become dazed and they may really struggle to see the road. In the worst case scenarios they could end up crashing into your car or causing another serious accident.
• Not only is this rule about safety, it is also has a lot to do with showing respect for your fellow road users. By not dimming your lights you are showing no regard for other drivers and this should never happen.
• When approaching a vehicle from behind that is up in front of you, it is also normal, safe procedure to dim your lights. If you fail to do this, the driver up ahead of you may be affected from the glare of your bright lights in their mirrors and this could cause them to lose control of the car and potentially causing an accident.
