Too much oil in a modern engine can be very bad.

First, if the oil level is too high it will get foamed up by the crankshaft turning. This can also create too much oil vapor in the crankcase which will get drawn into the crankcase ventilation system which will then get drawn into the intake system to be burned in the engine. Unfortunately oil vapor does not burn well in the engine and can end up in the exhaust gases.

Too much oil in the exhaust gases can contaminate the oxygen sensors as well as the catalytic converters possibly permanently damaging them. This would be a very expensive repair bill!

So if you accidently put too much oil in your engine it would be best to remove it as soon as possible.

If you think it's too full just drain some out oil and do it as soon as you can. Like bwtsrl said, it depends how much is in there.

Your front and rear crankshaft seal will leak.Drain the excess oil fast because once you have the leak it doesn't go away. You will start using more oil and leave a nice spot of oil on the ground. Never l repeat again never ever over full your engine and your transmission.

If you overfill the engine it can blow out seals and gaskets.

Too much oil will result in the engine being sluggish or it can be thrown out and cause leaks. It really depends on how much over full it is.

I did this... I had no idea that too much oil was bad... I really didn't... What happened was that my car started but it kind of puttered... When I tried to drive it, it just got a few meters before it started to smoke. Plus it wouldn't really accelerate. When I got the car towed to the nearest repair shop, they told me it had too much oil. So they drained the oil and replaced it with the correct amount. I was able to drive it fine after that!

Engine might run hotter than normal and leak out of the dipstick tube, I would drain a little bit out of the oil pan. Good luck:)

It can also improve performance of an engine increasing compression ratio by just a little by pouring in extra oil, but that performance hit may only last for 300-500 miles and then fall.
