You can obtain a TLC License online, via the phone or visiting your local Taxi and Limousine Commission office.  If you pass, it will allow you to drive and operate a taxi service legally within your area or state.

First of all you will need to go to a six-hour defensive driving class to ensure you are up to scratch with everything you need to know.

You will need proof that you are physically fit to drive a taxi, so a medical examination will need to be done by a qualified doctor.  This is not very expensive, and they will check all relevant aspects of your health including an eye test.  You will be given a certificate to prove you are fit, if this is the case.

Your application paper will then need to be completed.  Your criminal background will be looked into and fingerprints taken.  A drug test will also be required.

You will then need to go to a Taxi License school to learn everything you need to know about driving a taxi, including health and safety issues should an emergency occur.

Once you have done these classes, you will need to take a written test.  This consists of general driving knowledge as well as taxi specific information that you need to be aware of.  If you pass, you will be given your TLC license.

The process can be fairly long when obtaining a TLC license, but it is definitely worth it in the long run.  Make sure you prepare well for your exams and follow all instructions carefully.
