An adversary sitting outside in the parking lot or in the building next door (or way down the street, with the help of a high-gain antenna) can intercept traffic flowing between your wireless equipment?

Yes - if your wireless network is not adequately protected then somebody could easily use your Internet connection. Not only that, but they could also hack into your network and view what you are doing online. This is very risky and could potentially put your personal details and bank details in danger of being stolen.

The problem is that not all people set up passwords and secure keys for their wireless networks. These passwords act as a lock and key on your network and makes sure that only the people who know the password can gain access.

It is a very simple concept and it works like this:

  • You find the name of your router and click 'Connect'
  • The system will then ask you for the password
  • Enter the password and submit it
  • If the password is correct, the device you are using will connect

If you do not have a password or secure key code on your wireless Internet then make sure you get in touch with your Internet Service Provider and ask them what needs to be done in order to set one up. If you do not do this you are leaving your network wide open for people to steal your Internet and potentially your personal details.

Do not take the risk. Make sure you set up a password on your wireless Internet connection as soon as possible.
