As far back as 1806 the internal combustion engine was developed by Francois Isaac de Rivaz a Swiss engineer. This engine however ran on hydrogen and oxygen. Earlier still Leonardo da Vinci explained in 1509 how an engine without compression would work.

Nikolaus August Otto a German engineer developed the internal combustion engine in 1860. It was a four stroke engine which came to be known as the "Otto" Cycle. It was the first practical design for an internal combustion engine which would later be adapted in automobiles.

In 1879, the first, two stroke internal combustion engine was developed by Karl Benz. He later built his own version of the four stroke engine and this was successfully used in automobiles.

Rudolph Diesel in 1892 designed the internal combustion engine that worked on diesel. He was also a German Engineer.
