A French engineer whose name was Alphonse Beau de Rochas invented the principle of the 4-step combustion engine first time in 1862.

It was definitely not invented by Porsche or Ford. The first answer is right because I searched it on google.

Dr.PORSH I'm sure some will say it was ford.but he was a late comber.Porsh built a 2 cylinder motor and put it a small car.later he
put a 3 cylinder motor in to make it go faster.
