It is recommended that you change the oil and filter of your boat engine every year to ensure its smooth running and to avoid problems further down the line. The best time to change your oil is after you have finished winterizing the boat and while the engine is still warm. There are four steps to changing the oil in your boat, these are: Draining the oil, removing the old filter, installing a new filter and adding new oil to the engine.
The first step for draining the oil out of your 4 stroke engine is to place an oil drain container underneath the engine to catch the oil. Then, find the drain plug and socket on your engine and remove the drain plug to let the oil run out. Once the oil has drained out completely, replace the drain plug and wipe the engine clean.
Secondly, to remove the oil filter, take the engine hood off and locate the filter. Put a rag or towel underneath the filter to catch any oil drips and using a wrench, loosen the filter and remove it from the engine.
To install the new oil filter, wipe off the gasket surface of the engine and apply a small amount of engine oil to the new oil filter gisket or ‘O’ ring. Then, by hand, spin the new oil filter on and finally tighten it with a three-quarter turn.
The last step is to add the new oil to the engine. Locate the filler plug and remove it, then pour a sufficient amount of oil into it. Using a dip stick, check the oil level and add any more if necessary. If you have added too much oil, it is essential that you drain the excess out. Only use a dip stick to check the oil level at this stage, do not use the engine.
