Sometimes, if we need to replace the engine in our boat, require maintenance, or simply want to check that our warranty is still valid, it’s important that we check the year of our boat engine for more information. If the manufacturer of your engine is still in business, it is likely that they will have a chart that shows the serial numbers of boat engines they produced over the years. This serial number will be displayed on your boat engine for your reference, and if you can’t find the code required to determine the year of your boat on this motor, try to consult any documentation that you may have received once you purchased the boat engine, or the boat itself.

It’s also important for you to remember that in some cases, knowing the serial number will not be enough: You will also need to know the horsepower of your engine, too. Many boating enthusiasts will already know this; however, if you need some assistance, going on a specialist boating online discussion board or forum will allow you to get expert advice from other enthusiasts.

You also don’t have to contact the manufacturer to find out a serial number if you are having difficulty. Boat engine dealers, and the mechanics who repair vessels like yours, will normally have the expertise to assist you in your query. As many of these businesses have affiliation with manufacturers, or specialise in servicing boat engines by discontinued companies, you should be able to find the information you need here, too.

Depending the the brand of motor you have the numbers could be anywhere. Here is a website that is for mercury engines. It will show you where to look and give you the specifications for it. It also has links to others if your motor is not a Mercury.
