A theory test is used to determine the knowledge of new drivers in reference to road safety and driving regulations. The test was introduced to ensure that drivers had a deep understanding of safe driving behavior. In the past, the test covered any vehicle that would need to be driven. Recently, this has changed for different types of vehicles. There are now different theory tests for motorcycles and cars. The following guidelines is what is used to determine if you would be required to take the car theory test with a motorcycle license:
If you obtained a full motorcycle licence before 1 February 2001, you are exempt from passing your car theory test (but not practical test).
If you passed your motorcycle test after 1 February 2001, you will need to pass a car theory test before taking a practical test.
The goal behind the theory test is that new drivers develop an understanding about safe driving and road regulations that surpasses the knowledge needed to just simply pass the test. This is the primary reason that it is so important to require this test of drivers.
