What Causes My Automatic Transmission To Jerk Violently When Placed In Reverse Gear ?

1.On Volkswagen models the Atm is shifted by reading the different values from various sensors.If any one of the sensor is malfunction the shift jerk can occur.
2. The other possible cause is the ATM oil is not changed for a prolonged time, if it is so don't change the ATM Oil at once , keep the Old Oil and replace it little by little, otherwise your ATM will not shift.
3. Worn out or damaged ATM Parts,like solenoid valves,valve body etc... If so need overhaul for ATM.

Depends on what make, model and year your vehicle is, but with what little informatiion you have given, it sounds like a possible broken engine mount.
This is just a guess.
