When we see today's tremendously powerful and lethal nuclar submarines, we often wonder when these awe-inspiring machines first made their appearanc.Though the appearance of a submarine may seem to indicate that it is a product of the late 19th century or the early 20th century, the first actual submarine made its appearance much before that.

When we are talking about the first submarine, there are two categories we will have to address - a general submarine and a military submarine. The first submarine itself was made way back in 1620 by a Dutch engineer named Cornelius Jacobszoon Drebbel. This submarine was a rudimentary affair. To move it, you had to use oars. It was bult for the purpose of exploring life under the water.

However, the first military submarine was built in 1775. It was called Turtle, and was an egg-shaped contraption that was hand powered. It was designed by David Bushnell, an American, and could hold a single man. It was the first underwater vehicle to use screws for propelling itself.
