1) It stotres energy for a particular interval of time and then returns back it to engine after a very short interval of time.
2)It absorbs fluctuations.
3)It ensures uniform and smooth running of the engine.

It is used to make an engine run smoother by adding weight.

In some vechicles it is seen to have teeth on its edge. These teeth are used for starting the engine by means of the starter motor.
