The MOOG brand will not sell through NAPA nor do they sell MOOG parts or 'rebox MOOG' under the Master Ride brand. The quality difference is night and day.
Do you think NAPA would want their largest competitor brand selling against their own private label brand? I know this because I work for Federal-Mogul, which just purchased Affinia.
Both NAPA premium and MOOG are comparable in quality, however, their design philosophies are different. MOOG is known for metal on metal, gusher bearing designs and NAPA (same as raybestos) is known for polymer, polished ball stud designs. Our engineering has bench marked both brands and compared against cheap price point product and have confirmed this.
MOOG does not 'private label' their premium parts. You can only get a MOOG premium part in a MOOG box. Other brands supplied by Federal Mogul are different products, from different sources.
Consider this though, retailers who own their own branded product names, ie NAPA chassis, NAPA Master Ride, Autozone's Duralast, Advance Auto's Driveworks, etc, are in control of what quality they want in the box. Just b/c Afinia or Federal Mogul supply a private label part, doesn't mean they manufacture a crappy part. They supply private label parts as dictated by the buyer (AAP, AZ, etc): Quality, cost, features and benefits. And since it's private label, the retailer can switch suppliers at any point. So when you buy a private label, there really is no telling who's part you may get in the box.
And one final word of wisdom....national brand names that are sold by many companies have a reputation to uphold, otherwise they die. The country of origin doesn't mean anything, it's the quality, engineering and manufacturing controls and processes that the company upholds in it's products that make a quality part. For instance, Apple makes all production products in China, however, everybody is in love with a Chinese product...
