or are you asking how missing tooth in the reluctor ring works?
The sensor is a hall effect sensor which reads each tooth on the ring by magnetism and pulses a signal to the ECM telling the precise location. When it hits certain gaps in the ring thats what tells it certain positions.
For instance, there will one large gap then 20 small gaps, then another larger gap(but different than the 1st gap)
The first large gap told where the number 1 cylinder started, the next told when to fire the ignition system.
They are there to tell the computer the engines locations.
