There are a few things that you can check.
1. Check the gear oil, if it is below than the required level, refill the gear oil up to the mark.
2. There is a possibility that gear oil need to be changed.
3. The final thing on the check list is that your transmission need to be replaced.

I have a 2001 Pontiac Bonneville that has 110,000 miles with absolutely no transmission problems till now. Car runs great it is an automatic, you can feel and hear the car shift into 1st then 2cd then it just winds and does not shift into 3rd. I had the transmission fluid changed. A mechanic told my husband it could be the high shift in the transmission and we would only need to replace this and not a whole transmission. What do you think?
