The alternator is controlled by the ECM. I found out the hard way. Don't disconnect the battery if the alternator is
putting out to many volts. The ECM will catch on fire because all the power goes straight to the ECM instead of battery.

That sounds like the voltage regulator that is mounted in the center of the engine bay to the right of the Spark Control Computer.  I had a problem like this on afew of my Dodge Rams.  One time the Voltage Regulator quit working and caused the alternator to crank more around 18 Volts instead of 13.5 Volts.  It fried the ECU (Electronic Control Module) and the truck could not run.  So, in your case, check the PCM first, as it says in the Haynes manual.  Hope this helps.

I understand that the votage regulator is built in the alternator. I also know that the regulator is not the problem in my case. I believe the problem lies within the engine computer which is located on the center of the firewall. The voltage has been high (18 V), or low (around 10 V) or normal for the last six months or more. Other then the lights running brighter or the fans running faster, the van keeps starting and running. When I push on the center of the computer the voltage goes normal.

My problem is intermittent. Occasionally the voltage jumps to 18 and sometimes below 13.5. The battery maintains a charge. When the voltage is below normal, I can tap on te ECU and the voltage will return to normal. I've dissembled the connection at the ECU and cleaned and reinstalled it. The problem percests. One of these days I'll brakedown and replace the the ECU. I think that will fix it. Thanks for everyones help with this.

I replaced the Engine control computer and that fixed the problem. This as I expected months ago. It took me a while to get up the gumption to spend $150.00. The van now runs like a fine tuned watch. Thanks everyone for your input.
