Wheel hubs go bad! Wear and tear. Lack of grease / lubrication and or severe impact! 4 Wheel drive hubs will go bad if they STRIP. This happens when 4 wheel drive is locked in on dry pavement, or the vehicle gets "AIR" then lands hard while tire rotation increases in the air and lands hard causing severe , instant stopping of the free wheeling tire. ETC. ETC.

Water in the hub washes the bearing grease out then leaves the bearings unprotected from friction wear
