Attenuation means a reduction in the amplitude level of the outputted sound. In English, it makes the CD player's volume quieter whilst it's on.

My Sony CD player has a button marked Att. When I push it, the music that I am hearing is greatly reduced in volume. When I push the button again, the volume level returns to normal. If the volume at which you have the CD player set at, is lower than about 13 (on mine, anyway), the Att button actually mutes the unit.

So, this isn't a problem, it's actually a function of the unit, *if* it happens when you are pushing that button (or if you have a system that is connected to your mobile phone or something similar, which may utilize the Att function in order to reduce the volume of your system when a call comes in).

If, on the other hand, it's just happening all on it's own, it's likely that your player's developed a fault, and to be honest a fault like that is either going to be a) unfixable or b) cost more to fix than a new head unit would (just talking from experience on faults in this type of thing, here).

Hope this helps!
