Proton cars are manufactured by Proton Holdings Berhad. It is the shortened version for Perusahaan Otomobil Nasional based in Malaysia. It is Malaysia's first car manufacturer. The company was initiated in 1983 by then-Malaysia's Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad.
The first proton car was known as Proton Saga and their production began in September 1985. Today the Proton cars are very well known and there are different models of Proton cars. Proton Saga Iswara, Proton Wira, Proton Satria, Proton Putra, Proton Waja are some of their well known models. Proton cars are also seen in an episode in Mr. Bean, the famous British comedy show where a ball gets jammed in the exhaust pipe of a Proton car. It was a Proton Iswara model.
