On automatic transmissions this is bad.
On some automatic transmissions this is very very bad as the internal parts absorb the water and then rust from the inside out and then fail.
If the water got on by accident you may be able to save it by changing the fluid 2 or 3 times. If this happens because of a leak in the cooling system then that needs to be fixed first!
