Found this in the manual (2009 KLR 650):
"Check the engine oil through the oil level gauge. With the motorcycle held level, the oil should come up between the upper and lower level lines next to the gauge."
If the bike is cold, you may need to hold it level for a few moments to give the oil time to level off inside the glass.
