Comprehensive insurance covers windshields and such. You could quite possibly get your insurance to cover it as vandalism but it's a fine line what they will pay for with just liability. Best to call around some glass shops for prices or even a wrecking yard for a used one and then pay an installer to remove and replace. Not knowing the car? Hard to say if any rubbers need to be replaced with it. Lot's of low priced glass shops out there. Just explain to them your situation. Most will always try to help. I always did in my business. Let me know. Shame you live so far away! I would have one of my guys do it for free.

Coincidentally, I was looking into new windshields last week.

In my searching, I read a number of articles on windshield repair and replacement and one stated that a crack over 2 feet long had to be replaced rather than repaired.

I'm not sure I would be comfortable with a repair in your case, but I suppose it is possible that, depending on the location of the crack, technology may have advanced to that point.

I would of course defer to Rooster on the issue, but thought I would pass this along.

I was very surprised when I read that. It just so happened that our youngest boy just bought a new truck and I took back the 2002 Dodge that we bought for him.

It has a large u shaped crack of significant length and I was unaware that any crack was amenable to repair.

Could just have been a bait and switch thing.

Even the smallest rock chip repairs always come back and show. They just don't have it down right yet!

Jan, check with your Insurance as many states I know have state laws that force Insurance companys to have a little known rider to  automatically cover windshield repairs and/or replacements free of charge so worth making the call
