Most insurance
companies place an age restriction on who can purchase auto insurance.

In most cases, you will need to be 18 years old or older in order to
purchase auto insurance on your own. That’s not to say you’re uninsurable as a
minor, just that you will most likely need to be placed on your parent’s or
guardian’s auto insurance policy if you’re under age 18.

When it comes to purchasing car insurance, you obviously have to be of a legal driving age. Most of the time, car insurance is pegged to the owner of the car with options to add other drivers of the car to the contract. After a certain age, normally around 60, car insurance companies require the driver to be competent in order to continue granting coverage.
