If the chain breaks the distributor will not move. You could check it by removing the coil wire and the distributor cap and turn the engine over with the starter to see if the distributor is moving. If it is only worn the chain will make a rattling noise. You might need a trained ear to tell. If the timing chain has jumped (moved up a tooth on the gears) the engine may kick back when trying to start it.
