I have the same coin. It's 1788 South Carolina. On the front it says on the top, "The Palmetto State." It has a moon, palm tree, and a bird on it. On the bottom it says, "South Carolina." On the back in has two circles side by side. The left one has a palm tree in it and says "Animis Opibusque Parati." The right side says, "Dum Spiro Spero" with a lady standing and holding something in her hand and says SPES on the bottom of the circle. It's gold. It's way bigger than a quarter or a half dollar. If anyone can tell me how much it was, I would really appreciate it.

I would just like to state that I am a numismatist who specializes in colonial coins and what you have sounds like a commemorative medal, but I am not sure. You need to either give a better description or provide some pictures.

I have the same coin, bought it for a couple bucks a few years back. Not actually made in 1788, just there for the year we joined the union.
